Clarence C. Kacergis, 96, of Provincetown passed away peacefully at Cape Cod Hospital with his loving daughter, son-in-law and close family friend Nancy Edwards by his side on April 27, 2012. He was a devoted family man, and for 67 years, was the beloved husband of Tillie (Jackett) Kacergis, who predeceased him in 2005.
Clarence leaves behind his sons Clem (wife Marilyn) of Harwich Port, Michael (wife Kathy) of Provincetown, and daughter Kathy (husband Gordon Barney) also of Provincetown, and close family friend Paul DiTacchio. He also leaves six grandchildren: Michael, Amy, Peter, David, Adam and Katie, five great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild.
Mr. Kacergis was born on March 3, 1916 in Shenandoah, PA. He was the fifth child of a coal miner and life was a struggle. At age 18, Clarence joined the Navy and served as a machinist mate on the destroyer tender U.S.S. Whitney, based in San Diego. He learned to weld in the Navy and because of his skills; he spent the war years in the aircraft industry fabricating parts for military aircraft. In 1946, after the war ended, Clarence brought his family to Provincetown where soon after he started Provincetown Welding Works. The bulk of his metal fabrication work for the first 25 years was for the fishing fleet.

Clarence was a “Jack of all trades.” He had an uncanny understanding of how machine parts worked and the ability to see how things could be repurposed. Using this knowledge he fabricated things out of unrelated metal parts, including an ice toboggan, a motor boat with an automobile top, go carts, and motor bikes for his children and grandchildren. He is also responsible for the Provincetown Monument’s festive holiday lights. Clarence’s vision and accomplishments led admirers to dub him “the Leonardo daVinci of Provincetown,” and “one of the last of the true artisans…a real Renaissance man.” With the decline of the fishing fleet, Clarence turned his attention to art work using silverware, discarded machine parts and old tools to create whimsical artistic pieces. In the last few years, Clarence preferred to make smaller objects such as dragon flies and flowers, particularly roses.

A Funeral Mass will be held Friday May 4, 2012 at 11:30 a.m. in St Peter the Apostle Church, Prince Street, Provincetown. Burial will be private.

Donations may be made in his name to the Provincetown Rescue Squad, PO Box 109, Provincetown, MA 02657.

On Friday May 4, Richard Pereira, Sr.,known as ‘Pup’ to his family, passed away peacefully at his home after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

He was born in 1935 to the late Alfred and Ethel Pereira. His birthplace may have been Weymouth, but Provincetown was always his home. His family moved here when he was just a young boy. It was his Tremont Street childhood friend, Carolyn Patrick, who became his wife in 1956. They had been married for fifty-six years.

Dick proudly served in the United States Coast Guard in Iwo Jima. After his discharge he moved his small family to Fort Lauderdale, Florida where he lived for 10 years working as a marine mechanic manager. But, Cape Cod was where he truly wanted to be.

Back in town, with his slightly larger family, Dick worked as a marine mechanic and then as a “Jack of All Trades” for many years at Treasures and Trash along side his father-in-law, Joseph C. Patrick. He then went on to operate Dick’s Lower Cape Gulf in North Truro and later Dick’s Gulf in Provincetown.

When illness forced him to retire, with determination and passion he found other hobbies to keep himself busy. His garage became a workshop filled with creativity. Birdhouses became his therapy during his final years, as anyone who drove by his Nelson Avenue “sales” table would know.

In addition to his wife, Dick is survived by his children; Kim and her husband Mark of Cummaquid, Dicky of Centerville, and Dodie, his devoted caretaker, and her partner John Henderson of Provincetown; 5 grandchildren Melissa, Krista, Justin, Kurt, and Kortney; 2 great-grandchildren Ava and Dylan; and a sister Donna Avallone in North Carolina.

The family would like to thank all of the wonderful and compassionate people who have helped us through the years to achieve Pup’s dream of being able to live out his life at home surrounded by family and love. We will always be truly grateful for each of you.

It was Dick’s wishes that there be no service and the burial will be private. Donations may be made in his name to the Provincetown Rescue Squad, PO Box 109, Provincetown, MA 02657 or VNA Hospice, 434 Rte. 134 Suite D-3 South Dennis, MA 02660.

Wendy Hackett Everett of Provincetown died on April 11, 2012 at the Cape Cod Hospital at age 85. Born in Washington D.C. to Chauncey and Mary Hackett, Wendy was raised in the ’30s and ’40s Provincetown, which flavored her life ever after. Wendy and her lifelong friends, sisters Nancy Whorf and Carol Whorf (Westcott), worked as teen apprentices in Peter Hunt’s workshop in the 1940s. In 1948, Wendy graduated from Swarthmore College as an English major, went to work in a decorative arts studio in New York, and later married Richard Everett. They moved from Queens to Chappaqua, New York, in 1956.
A confirmed West Ender, Wendy spent summers in the 50s and 60s at the family house on Nickerson Street and later at Ruth Hiebert’s Captain Jack’s Wharf. She loved spur of the moment off season visits, often staying with Jack and Adelaide Gregory at the “Oldest House.” In 1972 she returned with her son Toby to live in Town fulltime.
In the 1960s Wendy was a regular on the beach watching the spectacle at the West End Racing Club, often with her friend Rhoda Rossmore. After seeing a pen and ink drawing she had done showing one summer’s high jinks at the club, Larry Richmond enlisted her to do a new picture annually, which he mailed to families and friends in the depths of winter as a reminder of the spirited scene each summer: kids learning to sail, swim, braid gimp, drink Nemasket soda, and flirt, and adults practicing “going nowhere fast.” There was Francis John winning a race, Fred Hemley nearly capsizing, Wally O’Donnell by his dory, Donald Murphy gesticulating, Jim Ferreira and Ken Gregory with scuba gear, Larry fixing a rooftop wind gauge, and Dick Santos patching yet another damaged hull. For many years Wendy’s Christmas cards were single page calendars in pen and ink showing the months and days intertwined with familiar Provincetown images – the harbor at dusk, cleats, fish, gulls, waves, weir traps, fishermen, the monument, the A & P, and faces. In the winters Rhoda helped Wendy find old breadboxes and sundry other items in junk shops and antique shops, on which Wendy would paint Provincetown things, such as Perry’s Market, the Town Hall, the harbor, boats, fish, a local house, sometimes with a vibrant Peter Hunt flourish but likelier in a quiet, bemused fashion. Like her painter mother, Mary Hackett, Wendy’s pictures never failed to be personal, even when she was painting an inanimate object.
She served for many years on the zoning board of appeals, writing opinions that distilled legal issues in a plain, sensible and fair way. She relished the friendships that came with work on town boards and committees, including the art commission, the beautification committee, the re-greening committee, and the conservation trust. She worked at the Masthead for John and Valerie Ciluzzi, and later for Salvatore and Josephine Del Deo at Sal’s Place Restaurant, where her penchant for making a universe out of a small familiar world inspired her to keep a log with comments, drawings and doodles by her and a generation of irreverent restaurant workers.
Her years in Provincetown were filled with conversations with friends young and old, about people near and abroad, living and gone. Her kitchen table had a familiar feel for many, a scene of talk and conviviality. Longtime tenant and family friend Steve Toomey did sketches on all manner of paper scraps as others held forth. Wendy developed new friendships to the end, but especially loved old friendships that have the cast of a long, un-ending conversation. An inveterate letter writer, Wendy believed that letters could sometimes accomplish what conversation cannot. Her letters described people, feelings, and things, unhurriedly, carefully, and usually fondly. .
Wendy leaves her three sons, Timothy of West Hartford, CT and his wife Lucy Potter, Michael of Kent, CT and his wife Blythe Everett, and her youngest son, John Tobias (Toby, known on radio as the Old Guy) of Truro, seven grandchildren, David, Genevieve, Hazel, Sam, Maggie, Anna, and Gwen. She also leaves her youngest brother, Patrick Hackett of Berkeley, CA and his wife Lee, and other dear family members, and friends. Her brother, Tom (Truxton) Hackett, died last year.
A service in her memory was held on May 19, 2012 at 3 p.m. at Saint Mary of the Harbor in Provincetown.

Elizabeth J. “Betty” (Silva) Rosenblatt 90, of Provincetown, formerly of Cherry Hill, NJ died peacefully July 25, 2012 at Cape Cod Hospital with her sister Rachel White, her sole 9 year caregiver by her side. She was born in Provincetown March 12, 1922, the daughter of the late Manuel and Annie E. (Lee) Silva. She was the wife of the late Theodore Rosenblatt. After graduating from Provincetown High School in 1940, she moved to Washington, DC and went to work at the Pentagon. While she was in personnel she was able to hire Ruth Hiebert, another Provincetown woman and daughter of the late Dr. Daniel Hiebert, Betty’s family physician and friend of her dad. Betty was a para legal for awhile. As she progressed in Civil Service she became a Budget Analyst and Chief Comptroller in Finance and Accounting with the Dept. of the Navy and then Department of the Army. She had a budget control assignment in Japan where she lived for 3 years after WWII, and once remarked that she was the only white American female amongst the many Japanese people on the subways. Betty received many framed citations and government awards and GS Ratings for her continued outstanding recognition in performance of service during periods of constant changes in missions and regulations, special report requirements with assumed supervisory responsibilities as a credit to herself and departments with the Federal Service. After her retirement she returned to her Alma Mater at Rutgers University where she had previously received her degrees in English, Spanish and Free Lance Writing. She became Editor in Chief of the literary magazine “Undiscovered” in 1984, a journal of outstanding poetry, essays and short stories. Her own work had been published prior to that. One of Betty’s poems, submitted by her sister appeared in Provincetown magazine on July 10, 2008. Betty respected the printed word and was an avid reader, selecting diverse material of all kinds. She loved movies (and rated them on her ticket stubs according to her standards), plays, arts & humanities, biking, skiing and hiking. A diminutive person in stature in her younger years, she wore spike heel shoes and amazed her family by hiking up and down mountain sides and everywhere in them. She volunteered much time teaching disadvantaged children to read and write and introduced them to the library and she rewarded them generously for their progress. She was a staunch Republican who belonged to the American Heritage Foundation, subscribed to National Review and was a friend of William Buckley Jr. She constantly defended the American Constitution vehemently and gave copies to everyone including one of her more political radical brothers. She was quick to support and slow to judge, no matter what religion, sex or political affiliation one embraced.
Betty was mentor to her 12 yr. younger sister who later became Betty’s caregiver when the insidious disease of Alzheimer’s became the thief of Betty’s memories until her essence was lost piece by piece. Betty was predeceased by 3 brothers, Malcolm, Emanuel and Norbert and their wives. Besides her sister Rachel White, with whom she lived in Provincetown, she is survived by 4 nieces, Sharon Walker and her husband James of Alabama, Maxine Notaro and her husband Joe of Truro, Roberta Magowitz and her husband Howard of Maryland and Rachel Peters and her husband Eugene of Provincetown and her nephew, Shaun White and his wife Tami of CT. She is also survived by numerous great nephews and nieces. Visiting hours are today (Sunday) at the Gately-McHoul Funeral Home 94 Harry Kemp Way Provincetown from 4:00-6:00pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Peter the Apostle Church 11 Prince St. Provincetown on Monday July 30, 2012 at 11:00am
If desired memorial contributions in honor of Betty may be made to Alzheimers of Cape Cod 765 Attucks Lane Hyannis, MA 02601 or to the Provincetown Rescue Squad PO Box 109 Provincetown, MA 02657 or to Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word, annunciation Frieary 5821 Old Leeds Rd.
